This page shall serve as a tracker of all the movies i watch. Each time i watch a movie, i will add it to the list with the viewing date, cast, a quick single/two line review and important facets related to it..
For the movies which warrant a full review, a full review shall follow in the main blog.
Lets get this rolling, people can chip in with their comments regarding every movie that keeps on appearing in the list and say one year or couple of years down the line, i would love to do some analytics on the sample present to see any trends in my movie watching patterns or my likeness/change of heart regarding some of them after repeat watches..
Scale of review ( out of 5):
1- Run away if someone’s playing it
2- Can afford to give it a miss
3- Okie Dokie
4- Must Watch
5- Unforgettable
1. Scent of a Woman-
July 1st, 2008 – Al Pacino, Chris O’Donnell – Drama – The Name of the movie is designed to mislead and slowly as the theme is established, it becomes more and more gripping, arresting and hits you like a ton of bricks. The climax is a befitting finale, and people can relate so easily to some part or other of the movie.
MUST WATCH!!
2. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na-
July 4th,2008 – Imran Khan, Genelia – Romance/Comedy – Two people who deserve three cheers are the casting director, for putting together an amazing cast and of course, A.R.Rehman. An otherwise dull movie, it’s tempo rises anytime a song is played, it has it’s amazing comic moments..But, the cliched parts are too long and too many. Teen Romance? ‘Socha Na tha’ and ‘MP3′ were much better..and hell, gimme the Sony sitcom ‘Just Mohabbat’ any day!!
CAN AFFORD TO GIVE IT A MISS.
3. Donnie Brasco-
July 16th, 2008 – Jhonny Depp, Al Pacino – Drama/Gangster. One of the few movies, where someone overshadows Al Pacino, Deppdoes it with style here. Based on a real life story of a mole, you must have seen these moments many times, but still the acting makes it a good watch.
OKIE DOKIE.
4. Fracture-
July 17th, 2008 – Anthony Hopkins – Thriller/Drama – A reverse thriller, which gets better with every passing minute. You know the murderer from frame one, but as his cunningness and slyness emerges, the plot thickens and you are left glued to the screen. A good story, great screenplay and even better acting makes it a good watch.
OKIE DOKIE.
5. Leaving Las Vegas-
July 17th, 2008 – Nicolas Cage, Elizabeth Shue – Drama/Romance – A Greek tragedy, where you can almost feel the pain of the protagonists. This one’sa straight entry into my list of ‘Top 10 movies when you are stoned’. Shot on a 13mm which gives it a more realistic feel, both Cage and Shue, their dire need for each other and the phase of self denial they go through while acknowledging each others demons has been captured brilliantly. No wonder, it fetched Cage the Oscar.
UNFORGETTABLE !!
6. The Dark Knight -
July 18th, 2008 – Christian Bale, Heith Ledger – Thriller/Action/Comic Book hero – Chirstopher Nolan delivers, yet again!!. Batman is darker, bigger and better and boy what a way to sign out for ‘the joker’. Heith Ledger overshadows bale, and bale seems to be happy complying. A new take on any type of comic book series, where Nolan charters into the physcology of each and every character and shows how people behave under chaos. Action, effects, dialogues, suspense, this one has got it all.unmatchable experience.
MUST WATCH!!
7. Rosemary’s Baby -
July 18th, 2008 – Mia Farrow – Horror/Anti Christ- Polanski’s masterpiece, considered to be one THE best horror movies ever, is not exactly a gory/spine chilling horror movie, but plays more into the mind of Rosemary, who is about to deliver her baby. Mia Farrow embodies innocence and her remarkable acting makes one feel her darkest fears. The movie may seem outdated a bit in today’s times, but a good watch nonetheless.
OKIE DOKIE!!
8. The Color of Money -
July 19th,2008 – Paul Newman, Tom Cruise – Drama/Sport – Scorsese, Newman and Cruise – reason enough to watch the movie. Exploring themes of pride, competitiveness as against hustling and making money, this one fetched Newman the oscar. Great Music, some good thight pool matches and frikking dialogues, this one is a worthy follow up to ‘the hustler’.
MUST WATCH.
9. Dead Man -
July 20th, 2008 – Jhonny Depp – Western/Drama – Too slow, too pretencious, or maybe i did’nt get it. The only thing that worked for me was the guitar playing in the background. Watch this only if you swear by Depp. Period.
RUN AWAY IF SOMEONE’S PLAYING IT!!
10. The Hunt for Red October -
July 20th, 2008 – Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin- Thriller/War – A Film that has written ‘welcome to the 90′s’ all over it. The ‘supposedly’ smart dialogues, the sacrificing officer, the cool customer showing off his coolness under the most tough situations, this one’s got it all. The plot is good, last few reels of the thriller work well, but overall the suspense and impact is delivered though words and actions when it should have been thorugh Physche. Go for the novel instead. It’s much better.
CAN AFFORD TO GIVE IT A MISS!!
11. Rocky -
July 20th,2008 – Sly – Sports – 1976 marked the birth of one of the most loved fictional heroes ever – ‘Rocky Balboa’. Shot in 28 days and made with a show string budget, this movie stole the ‘best movie’ oscar from the likes of ‘Taxi Driver’. Sets the tone for the rest of the Rocky movies and introduces us to the world of ‘Rocky’.
MUST WATCH!!.
12. Blue Velvet -
July 21st,2008 – Isabella Rossellini- Thriller/Noir- A cult movie of sorts, this is one of the earlier ‘Lynchian’ movies. Lynch explores Noir here, and elements of symbolism can be found although are not as prominently as his later works. A small town detective movie on the surface, but lynch fans can find underlying symbolism throughout. Welcome to the deep, dark, physchotic world of David Lynch.
OKIE DOKIE in general & MUST WATCH for lynch fans
Oh I see, you have a separate space for movies. Good work. More later
Hey, w.r.t Dark Knight. It’s all Heath Ledger.
I know, and all these seems pre destined now..for ledger to die playing ( and possibly due to playing) the joker, the greatest role of his life.
I deserve a special mention!!
